CSB User Guide for archiving data -- updated 2008.09.15

This procedure will archive to DVD-R all the data in a directory and its subdirectories. If necessary, the procedure will break the data up over several DVDs.

Operation

This procedure runs from Core user-area linux workstations. (For system archives, it will also work from ds1 and remus).

There are three methods, which are summarized here. Click on the links below for more details.
method: Archiving generic data Archiving crystallographic data Filesystem image archives Manual DVD burning
Setup: setup gendvd setup burndvd See online instructions See online instructions
Description: Setup is quicker and simpler than crystallographic; prints minimal data on media labels. Provides easiest access to archived data, but may fail if you have long or unusual filenames. Upgraded 2008.09.15. Best for synchrotron or other raw data sets. Allows for printing information about the data in a standard format on the media's label. Preserves more accurate representation of original filesystem. Creates a compressed backup. Will work when the generic method does not. Slower. Allows you to make one or more copies of an .iso file complete with your own designer label.

When things go wrong...

If any of these procedures does not work, it is possible that the PC controlling the Rimage needs to be rebooted. If there are any problems, please notify the staff.
